MYTH: Smoking, Alcohol and Illicit Drugs Consumption During Pregnancy as Causes of Autism

Another well-believed myth is that the unhealthy lifestyle of a mother can lead to the birth of a child with autism.

To date, there is no study that clearly shows the relationship between these factors and autism. Demographic analysis contradicts the role of these factors, as seen in the 4 graphs below.

It can be seen that while the percentage of to-be-mothers who smoke or consume drugs and/or alcohol either decreases or remains almost the same over the years, the number of children with autism is increasing every year.

If any of these factors were the cause of autism in children, we would see that the number of children with autism aligns with the information on the graphs.
